for those who want it and those who don’t.Department of Dermatology of
Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) will soon start a clinic for
patients of hair loss and excessive hair growth.
This was disclosed by Dr Mala Bhalla during Continuing Medical Education (CME)
programme on ‘Newer Trends in the Management of Hair Disorder’ at GMCH on
Saturday.
"The hair disorders are on the rise and organisation of this CME was an attempt
to keep the dermatologists abreast of the latest modalities of treatment as well
as newer theories on these disorders," said GP Thami, chairman of the CME. This
was the first DERMA CME programme organised by the Department of Dermatology and
Venereology, GMCH.
Experts from renowned institutes of northern India discussed the new aspects of
treatment of both hair loss and removal of unwanted hair. Prof HM Swami,
Director Principal, GMCH, inaugurated the programme. About 100 dermatologists
from the northern region attended the highly informative and interactive
sessions on the management of various hair diseases.
"Sudden weight loss by women to look beautiful is a major cause of hair fall.
Some drugs and loss of hemoglobin are also the causes of hair fall," said Dr
Archana Singal from Delhi University College of Medical Sciences, while talking
to TNN.
"The treatment takes six to 12 months. In some exceptional cases, the option of
hair transplant is also available," she added.
Prof NL Sharma, Head, Department of Dermatology, IGMC, Shimla discussed hair
biology and the effect of hair cosmetics like shampoos and conditioners on hair.
Dr Anil Bhansali, Head Department of Endocrinology, PGI, gave a lecture on
hirsuitism (excessive hair growth in women) and the various investigations and
treatment modalities of this condition.
Prof SK Sharma, Head, Department of Dermatology, AIIMS, New Delhi presented his
research work on patchy hair loss and discussed the various methods of
treatment. Dr Archna from Delhi presented a lecture on treatment of common hair
fall in women.
The scientific session ended with a panel discussion on ‘How permanent is hair
removal?’ which was moderated by Prof AJ Kanwar of Department of Dermatology,
PGI.
